According to Xinhua International Headlines citing Syrian and British media reports, Syrian regime leader Ahmed al-Sharaa will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, on October 15th, local time. This is Shala's first visit to Russia since the overthrow of Assad's regime last year.
The Syrian Arab News Agency reported that the two sides will focus on the regional situation and the ways of cooperation between Syria and Russia.
Reuters quoted a Syrian source as saying that Shala would discuss with Putin the survival of the Russian naval base in Tartus and the air base in Khmeimim in western Syria.
Sources said, Shara will also formally ask Russia to hand over former Syria President Assad.
On December 8, last year, the “Syrian Sham Liberation Army” led by Ahmed Saleh announced the “liberation of Damascus and the overthrow of the Assad regime”, and then established a transitional administrative department with the group’s members as the main base.
Recently, some new news has been circulated about Assad, who is in refuge in Russia. For example, in early October there were reports that at the end of December 2024, Assad felt unwell and sought medical help, after which signs of poisoning were detected in his body.
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov recently refuted rumors that Assad was poisoned. He claimed that Russia had provided asylum to Assad and his family out of humanitarian considerations, and the relevant poisoning allegations were completely inconsistent with the facts.
In addition, the Global Times recently quoted German media reports as saying that Assad is currently living with his family in a luxurious apartment in a skyscraper in Moscow and is “long-time addicted to online games.”
