Ethiopia adopts regulation to establish national nuclear energy commission

Xinhua News Agency, Addis Ababa, October 15 (Reporter Liu Fangqiang) The Council of Ministers of Ethiopia passed a regulation on the 14th, deciding to set up the National Nuclear Energy Commission of Ethiopia to lead and coordinate the work related to the peaceful use of nuclear technology in the country on the premise of conforming to the international framework.

The Ethiopian Council of Ministers issued a statement on the same day saying that advancing the application of nuclear technology is crucial to assisting the country’s development, mainly in areas such as power supply, industrial development, healthcare and scientific research.

On the same day, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abby appointed Sandokan Debebe as head of the National Nuclear Energy Commission, who previously served as head of the Prime Minister’s office.

On September 25, Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation announced that it had signed nuclear energy cooperation documents with Ethiopia and planned to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of a nuclear power plant in the country. According to the plan, the two sides will set up a special working group to conduct a feasibility study on building a nuclear power plant in Ethiopia and promote the signing of an intergovernmental cooperation agreement. The plan also states that Russia will provide relevant technical training for Ethiopian technicians.

Currently, South Africa is the only country in Africa with operating nuclear power plants, and Egypt's nuclear reactors are under construction. Countries such as Ghana, Algeria, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan have also proposed nuclear power plant construction plans.
