Reconstruction of Gaza: $70 billion and “decades” with 50 million tons of debris to be cleaned

According to "Reference News", on October 14 local time, Jako Silliers, Special Representative for the Head of the United Nations Development Program's Assistance Program to the Palestinian People, said that the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip would require US$70 billion.

Sillies said at a press conference in Geneva that after two years of war, the reconstruction work in the Gaza Strip faces huge funding gaps and serious humanitarian challenges."The cost of the reconstruction project in the Gaza Strip is expected to be US$70 billion." He said that in March this year, the World Bank estimated that the initial reconstruction work would require approximately US$23 billion, but reconstruction costs have since risen sharply, and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip may take "decades" to complete.

According to Turkey's "Daily Morning News", the reconstruction cost of US$70 billion was estimated based on the latest situation in September, which is higher than the US$53 billion estimated by the United Nations, the World Bank and the European Union in February.

Cyril said in a press conference that some countries, including the United States, Arab countries and European countries, have shown initial signs of willingness to provide assistance to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, "we have received very good signs," but he did not disclose any details.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has previously said he will seek support from the Gulf countries, the United States and Europe to rebuild Gaza under a new ceasefire agreement and is confident that funding for the project will be available quickly.

Two years after the Israeli army’s massive bombing, Gaza has become one of the world’s most damaged areas. The latest satellite data shows that the destruction rate in the entire Gaza Strip is now 84 percent, and that the destruction rate in certain areas, such as Gaza City, is even 92 percent. According to the UN Agency for Development, Gaza Strip needs to be cleaned up at least 50 million tons of debris. Cyrils also noted that the remains of Palestinian victims may also be buried in the debris.

Israel and Hamas last week reached the first phase of a long-sought ceasefire agreement aimed at ending the two-year devastating war in the Gaza Strip. According to statistics from the Palestinian Health Department, the two-year conflict has killed more than 67000 Palestinians and injured more than 100,000 others. Most areas have been plunged into severe famine and 1.9 million people have been displaced.
