The United Nations General Assembly elects 14 Human Rights Council members

The plenary session of the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations will elect 14 members of the UN Human Rights Council to replace the membership that will end at the end of this year.

The members of the Human Rights Council elected this time are: Angola, Egypt, Mauritius, and South Africa in Africa; Vietnam, India, Pakistan, and Iraq in the Asia-Pacific region; Estonia, and Slovenia in Eastern Europe; Chile and Ecuador in Latin America and the Caribbean; and Italy and the United Kingdom in Western Europe and other regions. Among them, South Africa, Vietnam and Chile were re-elected.

The United Nations Human Rights Council was established in 2006 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It has 47 seats, including 13 in Africa and 13 in the Asia-Pacific region, 8 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 6 in Eastern Europe and 7 in Western Europe and other regions. Every year, the General Assembly re-elects about one-third of the members of the Human Rights Council. The term of office of the members is three years, and the term of office can be * once. Two consecutive terms must be separated by one year before seeking a new term of office.

Members of the United Nations Human Rights Council are elected by secret ballot by the General Assembly of the United Nations, and candidates must be elected by more than half of the votes of the member states.
