Although the Chinese, Thai and Myanmar authorities claimed to have destroyed Myanmar's border fraud parks, an AFP investigation showed that these factories, which involved Chinese and American victims and had defrauded billions of dollars in total, have not only not been eradicated, but are actually larger than before. Satellite images and drone footage show that the heavily guarded park in Myawaddy on the Thai-Myanmar border is rapidly expanding and making extensive use of Elon Musk's Starlink satellite network.
Aerial photos taken on September 17 from the Sumo district of That Province, Thailand, showed that the KK Park in Miawati Town, eastern Myanmar, was defrauding the complex. An AFP investigation found that despite the joint attack by the three countries, an entire area was added to the park within seven months, and the main entrance security checkpoint was also greatly expanded. The investigation found that the parks, famous for the “killing pigs” scam, were mostly operated by Chinese criminal groups in cooperation with the Myanmar militia. In February, the three countries pressured for the “total eradication” of the parks and the release of about 7,000 people, but Thai police revealed that up to 100,000 people were still imprisoned there.
Satellite imagery shows that several parks were resumed after a few weeks of combat operation. After the network and power cut in Thailand, the roof of the park quickly covered the star link receiver. Almost 80 star link receivers were installed on the roof of one of the largest parks.
It is worth noting that Star Link is not officially licensed in Myanmar, and it was not until February this year that traffic reached the level that could be connected to local network providers. However, data from the Asia-Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) shows that from July 3 to October 1, Star Link ranked first in daily traffic in Myanmar.
California prosecutors warned StarChain systems were exploited by fraud groups last July, but did not respond. The United States Congressional Economic Committee said it had begun an investigation into the relationship between StarChain and the park. SpaceX did not respond to the request to comment. U.S. Cybercrime prosecutor Erin West noted that “a U.S. company made this happen is shocking.” The U.S. Treasury Department said U.S. citizens were the main target of the Southeast Asian fraud group, losing about $10 billion last year, up from 66 percent.
A comparison of satellite photos shows that the KK Park in Myowadi, Myanmar expanded rapidly from March (top) to September (bottom) this year. (AFP)
Experts warn that the expansion of the park is astonishing, with the enemy military facilities in the Canberra. Satellite imagery shows that of the 27 scam centers in Shenzhen, many are new offices and dormitory buildings in the park. The whole area of the park has been added in seven months, the main entry security checkpoint has also been significantly expanded, and at least five new ports on the Mekah have been built for Thai transportation of goods.
Last month, the United States imposed sanctions on nine people and companies related to Shwe Kokko Park and Chinese crime boss She Zhijiang. The U.S. Treasury Department called Ruixing International a "notorious hub for virtual currency investment fraud". The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime pointed out that the fraud industry in Southeast Asia attracted about $37 billion last year.
A report from the Australian Institute for Strategic Policy shows that these parks are licensed to operate by militiamen affiliated with the Myanmar military government. Report author Nathan Ruser told AFP,"As long as the military government continues to condone it, this industry will always be just a cat-and-mouse game."
