A 23-year-old medical student in Durgaupur, West Bengal, India, has been raped recently and has caused widespread concern. The girl, a second-year student at a local private medical school, was raped by several men at night with friends when she was forced to go out to a remote place. The girl's father said the daughter was suffering, worried about her safety, and intended to get her back to Orissa to continue her studies.
(India's Prime Minister of West Bengal, Mamada Bannagi)
Three people have been arrested and one person is detained. However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamada Banerjee questioned female students going out in the early morning.Banerjee pointed out that how can a female student studying in a private medical school go out at 0:30 in the morning? Who does this responsibility belong to? It is hoped that the Bangladeshi police will take necessary action and the school should take care of students, especially at night."Students should not be allowed to go out, they must protect themselves."At the same time, she criticized the neighboring state of Orissa’s government for failing to act on similar cases.
Banagi’s remarks immediately sparked a strong rebellion. The People’s Party of India approved its “accusation of victims,” and leader Suh Damaimdar strongly criticized it, saying it pushed responsibility to the school, similar to how it handled last year’s RG Kar Medical College rape murder, blaming the victim’s head for not being eligible to continue to rule. The National Women’s Committee also condemned its remarks as absurd.
A comprehensive morning report.
