Brazil to zero illegal deforestation by 2030

Xinhua Agency, Brasilia, October 13 (Reporter Wu Hao) Brazilian Vice President Alkmin said on the 13th that Brazil will achieve zero illegal deforestation by 2030 and promised to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 2035 compared with 2005 levels by 59% to 67%.

At the opening ceremony of the 30th Ministerial Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 30), Arkiming said that much of Brazil’s greenhouse gas emissions came from deforestation.In the past two and a half years, Brazil has strengthened forest protection, reducing the deforestation rate in the Amazon rainforest by almost 50%.In the future, Brazil will carry out forest restoration efforts and illegal deforestation to zero by 2030.

Alckmin said that Brazil is committed to reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by 59% to 67% by 2035 compared with 2005 levels, which is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 850 million to 1.05 billion tons.

COP30 will be held in November in the northern Brazilian city of Beren, in the Amazon rainforest region. Arqueming said that more than 80% of electricity in Brazil currently comes from renewable energy.As the COP30 presidency, Brazil hopes to continue to be a role model in global environmental issues.
