Trump temporarily promises Hamas to maintain security in Gaza: militants shoot in the streets for 5 days, killing 33 people

According to Reuters, after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire, Hamas is actively rebuilding control of the Gaza Strip and using tough measures to suppress local factions, which has killed at least 33 people in the past five days. At the same time, Hamas seems to have gained tacit approval from the United States and is temporarily responsible for local security.

Two Gaza security sources revealed that since the official ceasefire on October 10, Hamas militants have reappeared on the streets and public places, but acted cautiously, fearing that the fragile ceasefire situation would be broken.

After the last transfer of hostages was completed, Al-Qassam Brigades members appeared on the streets to patrol. Reuters footage shows dozens of fully-armed Hamas members gathered outside a southern Gaza hospital, including an elite “shadow group” responsible for kidnapping and keeping hostages.

On the evening of the 13th, a shocking video circulated on social media, showing several face-to-face gunmen (some of whom had their heads wrapped in Hamas’s iconic green headscarf) shooting at least seven men on the streets with machine guns forced to kneel down.

Palestinian political analyst Reham Owda pointed out that Hamas's move is aimed at deterring groups that cooperated with Israel during the war to undermine the situation in Gaza; At the same time, it also hopes to show the outside world its dominance in the future Palestinian security architecture, but Israel is expected to reject this position.

When US President Trump was asked about Hamas's "cleansing of dissidents" in Gaza on his way to the Middle East on the 12th, he said that Hamas has been "temporarily authorized" to take charge of public security in Gaza, and said: "They really want to maintain order, and we agree to let them maintain security for a period of time." This remark was widely interpreted by the outside world as Washington's acquiescence to Hamas's actions.

Hamas, on the other hand, stressed that it would not allow a “security vacuum” and would continue to “preserve public security and property” and declined to discuss disarmament, saying it would only consider surrendering weapons after the establishment of a Palestinian state.
