China clarifies: Rare-earth control has nothing to do with cooperation in Bahamas

[Global Times reporter Wu Yuanchun Global Times special correspondent Wen Jian] "The export control measures on rare earths and other related items issued by China recently have nothing to do with Pakistan. This is a legitimate practice for the Chinese government to improve its own export control system in accordance with laws and regulations, aiming at better safeguarding world peace and regional stability and fulfilling international obligations such as non-proliferation." At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 13th, spokesman Lin Jian said in response to a question from the Global Times reporter.

In early September this year, Pakistan and U.S. companies signed two key mineral agreements, with the former supplying key minerals and rare earth elements to the latter. In late September, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz and Army Chief of Staff Munir visited the United States and showed US President Trump a wooden box containing minerals at the White House, which some foreign media called rare earth minerals. According to Pakistan's "Daily News" report, in early October, Pakistan had delivered the first batch of rare earths and key minerals to the US Strategic Metals Company.

Some foreign media claimed that Pakistan's move triggered China's introduction of new regulations.Today, the Ministry of Commerce of China issued an announcement to implement export controls on some foreign rare-earth related items and rare-earth related technologies containing Chinese ingredients.

The reporter of the Global Times asked on the 13th routine press conference: "Recently, there are media reports that Pakistan has used Chinese equipment and technology to export rare earth to the United States, triggered China's introduction of new rules to strictly control the export of rare earth-related technology, some of the media published videos and articles, saying 'Pakistan to the United States donate rare earth samples and agree to carry out rare earth cooperation' and 'China bidding to counter Pakistan's export of rare earth to the United States.'

Lin Jian responded: "As far as I know, there is communication between China and Pakistan regarding Pakistan-US mineral cooperation. Pakistan emphasizes that Pakistan's exchanges with the United States will never harm China's interests and China-Pakistan cooperation. The ore displayed and presented by Pakistani leaders to US leaders was samples of Pakistani gemstone ore purchased by staff. The relevant reports you mentioned just now either do not understand the truth, or are chasing rumors, or even sow discord. They are unfounded."

China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners, the two countries' friendship has long been strengthened, the two sides have alwaysined a high level of strategic mutual trust, and closely communicate on major issues related to the common interests of both sides.
