Trump also has the intention to attend the ASEAN summit to be held in Malaysia later, but he also gives the premise of his participation, that is, he can show the results of his regional mediation.
Although this news was revealed by sources on October 6, it also shows that Trump has not given up his pursuit of the Nobel Peace Prize.
In addition, Trump also put forward a condition, which is also a specific continuation of the previous condition, namely, to exclude China from the signing ceremony of the peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia, otherwise he would not attend the ASEAN summit.
It is worth mentioning that on the morning of October 7, China and Malaysia simultaneously announced that they would conduct a joint military exercise later (late October).
So, will Trump’s plot succeed and what does the upcoming joint military exercises between China and Malaysia mean?
China and Malaysia are determined to agree
Not long ago, Trump's itinerary from late October to early November was announced. He will join ASEAN from Malaysia, then visit Japan north, and then go to South Korea. However, how long will he stay in South Korea? Whether it will really attend the APEC Summit remains to be announced by the United States.
However, as the time to attend the ASEAN summit is getting closer, the U.S. has asked Malaysia to exclude Chinese officials from the meeting and not allow China to participate in the ceremony of signing a peace agreement between Thailand and Cambodia.
To be honest, Trump’s goal is clear, on the one hand, not to let China steal his head, on the other hand, to continue pursuing his Nobel Peace Prize, and, of course, the most important thing is to exert its own influence on ASEAN countries.
In fact, Trump's participation in the ASEAN Summit had been confirmed with the Prime Minister of Malaysia as early as July this year. Malaysia naturally agreed to Trump's request at the time in exchange for tariff reductions from the United States.
However, the demand to exclude China now is likely to make it difficult for Malaysia to do, because whether it is listening to Trump or not, it will have a certain impact or potential impact on Malaysia.
In fact, the situation in Malaysia is the same as Singapore's national security coordination minister and interior minister, Shang Morgan, said at the Asia Forward Summit, "China and the United States are the right eye for Singapore, they can't choose between the two."
It was also thinking about Malaysia’s concerns that our country took the initiative and decided to hold joint military exercises with Malaysia in late October and invite other ASEAN countries to attend.
It is worth mentioning that this upcoming joint military exercise was held three months earlier than the original time of the two sides, and the sudden adjustment must have a reason, and this reason may be directly related to the requirements of the United States.
Of course, the same is the purpose of this joint military exercise, on the one hand to warn other ASEAN countries not to fear the threat of Trump, China is their strong backing, and on the other hand to warn Trump not to try to provoke the relationship between China and ASEAN countries.
Vietnam also made a statement in this regard. They said that the ASEAN summit should be inclusive, and no country should be excluded casually, which is not in line with the rules at all.
Overall, the vast majority of ASEAN countries disagree with Trump’s demands, and they know that ASEAN and China are already inseparable.
Peace and prosperity are what ASEAN really needs
In 2024, the trade volume between China and ASEAN will be 6.99 trillion yuan, accounting for almost 16% of China's total foreign trade value. For this reason, China and ASEAN have been each other's largest trading partners for five consecutive years. Therefore, from an economic perspective alone, the ASEAN Summit cannot exclude China.
Moreover, China also played a big role in regulating the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. After the meeting, Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Manet specially thanked China for "always supporting a peaceful solution."
At that time, Acting Prime Minister Putan of Thailand also admitted that China offered to help ease the conflict and thanked China for its diplomatic efforts.
In contrast, Trump's adjustment to the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia at the time was like this. He posted on social media: "The United States will negotiate trade agreements only if there is a ceasefire, and if an agreement cannot be reached before August 1, Cambodia-Thailand export tariffs to the United States will soar to 36%."
It is worth mentioning that this mediation method of tariff threat makes them disgusted, because some Thai scholars have pointed out that Trump's intervention did speed up the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, but this is not the root cause.
In fact, as far as this issue is concerned, Trump has already failed, because the results of this year's Nobel Peace Prize have been announced, and the winner is a politician from Venezuela, an old rival of the United States, which is quite ironic for Trump.
As the saying goes,"those who have achieved enlightenment have more help, and those who have failed have little help." ASEAN countries are very clear that China brings them cooperation and development, and regional peace and prosperity are what they really need.
