Sham Sheikh summit: Four countries guarantee ceasefire in Gaza

The leaders of several countries and international organizations held a summit in the Egyptian Red Sea coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh on October 13, focusing on the first phase of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The leaders of Egypt, the United States, Turkey and Qatar signed a document providing guarantees for the ceasefire agreement.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Presidential Palace, the summit emphasized that the international community must cooperate and provide all necessary means to ensure the implementation and continuity of the terms of the ceasefire agreement, including promoting a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, completing the exchange of detainees and prisoners, and realizing Israeli withdrawal and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

During the meeting, Egyptian President Seyce, US President Trump, Qatari Emir (head of state) Tamim and Turkish President Erdogan signed a document. According to media reports from Egypt's Al-Ahram and other Middle Eastern countries, the leaders of the four countries pledged to support the implementation of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza as guarantors in this document.

In his speech at the summit, Sisi stressed that the “two-state plan” is the only way to peaceful coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis, saying Egypt intends to hold an international conference on the early restoration, reconstruction and development of the Gaza Strip.

Trump said that some of the leaders of the participating countries intended to join the "20-point plan" mentioned by the United States to supervise the post-war establishment of the "peace committee" in the Gaza Strip. he said that the participating countries agreed that the necessary condition for the reconstruction of Gaza is the de-militarization of Gaza, and it is also necessary to establish a new civilian police force to maintain security.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) did not send representatives to the meeting. Palestinian President Abbas attended the meeting and met briefly with Trump.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled his trip at the last minute on the grounds that a Jewish holiday began that night. According to Israel's Channel 12 TV station, the reason behind it is that Netanyahu does not want to offend domestic supporters and right-wing allies by attending the meeting with leaders such as Abbas and Erdogan.

Hamas and Israel began a new round of Gaza ceasefire negotiations on Sham Sheikh on 6 June, with mediators such as Egypt and Qatar announcing the first phase of the ceasefire agreement on the morning of 9 June, the agreement came into force at 12 a.m. on the 13th, Hamas released two groups of 20 detainees and handed over the remains of four detainees; Israel began to release 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees, but indicated that Hamas deliberately delayed the transfer of the remains of detainees.
