Zelensky meets with Karas to discuss EU energy support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia

Ukrainian President Zelensky met with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy in Kiev on the 13th, and the two sides discussed topics such as Ukraine's energy support, the EU's new round of sanctions against Russia and the use of Russian assets frozen overseas.

Zelensky and Karas discussed in detail the attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and measures to strengthen the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system, according to news released on the Ukrainian presidential website on the same day. Both sides focused on discussing the issue of using Russia’s frozen overseas assets for Ukraine’s defense and heavy recommendations, as well as a new round of EU sanctions against Russia. Karas said European experts are assessing Ukraine’s assistance needed to repair the energy system, while the EU will continue to weaken Russia’s economy through sanctions.

Zelensky said the Ukrainian side will complete the technical preparations for all chapters of the accession negotiations by the end of November.

At a joint press conference held after the meeting, Zelensky said that he plans to travel to the U.S. capital Washington for a meeting with U.S. President Trump on the 17th, where the two sides will focus on the defense of Ukraine and the long-term pressure on Russia.

Kallas said that the EU is formulating a package of support plans for Ukraine's energy sector.

In terms of Ukraine's energy support, Karas said at a joint press conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Serpica that the EU has previously raised 800 million euros to support Ukraine's winter energy, and the EU will allocate another 100 million euros to help Ukraine repair power generation equipment, build shelters and related facilities to cope with bad weather.
