37-Year-Old Woman Saves $10 Million, Quits Switzerland's Annual Pay $3 Million Job, Retires Early With Her Partner

According to US media reports on October 12, when Florence Poirer was a senior project manager at Google in Zurich, Switzerland, her annual income was approximately US$390,000 (approximately 2.8 million yuan), but she decided to leave in 2024.

The 37-year-old woman is not dissatisfied with her job. "I left Google without burnout at all," she said."The team atmosphere was pleasant and the work content was quite comfortable."

What prompted her to leave was her awareness of life and I realized that quality time with loved ones is the most important thing,” she said.

This includes her partner Yang, an older 17-year-old colleague. After meeting in 2017, she realized she had to re-planning the traditional retirement pattern and I couldn’t wait until I retired to enjoy time with him because he was older,” she explains.

Boyer has always worked hard on savings, but this awareness prompted her to follow the FIRE campaign, which advocates early retirement through active savings investment.

“Then I realized I didn’t have to continue climbing the workplace ladder.I’ve reached enough level—I’m happy to be free to try other careers,” she says.

By January 2024, she had saved about $1.5 million (approximately RMB 10 million). In April of the same year, she resigned with Yan Duo. Boyer referred to the break as a “mini retirement”—reserving funds to support 18 months—although she had no clear plans on whether to return to a full-time job.

"I'm not anxious about returning to the workplace," she said."I thought I would consider coming back now, but we really enjoy the daily life created by this mini retirement."

Boyer had a long time for the characteristics of a major change. When she worked in marketing in Belgium in 2013, she was not satisfied with the job.On her way home on a tired weekend, she spoke to her colleagues about emptiness, and the French proverb "the unrisking gained nothing."

The phrase echoed in her head all weekend. Poirel said she realized it takes "the courage to embrace change" to be happy.

She filed her resignation on Monday and decided to go to Dublin, Ireland, with no job invitations and no contacts. Soon after her arrival, she received a contractual job at Google Content Security Audit with an annual salary of approximately $60,000, starting her career at the company.

She worked for more than a dozen years at Google and grew steadily through team rotation and promotion. She moved from Dublin to Zurich in 2017 to project management and eventually joined senior management, raising her annual salary to $39,000 by 2024.

When the savings target of US$1.5 million is achieved in January 2024, deciding when to leave will become the final hurdle. For a self-proclaimed "financial conservative", giving up a high-paying job is not easy.

“Refusing this level of income is indeed dissuasive,” Boyer said.

But she never regretted it. During Mini's retirement, she swam in Lake Zurich every day, provided career guidance to women, and traveled overseas with Yang. "I thought I would get bored quickly, but now a year and a half has passed, and I still enjoy it," she said.

Even if she returns to the workplace in the future, she will follow her conditions-whether she chooses a part-time job or only does meaningful work. In any case, she is glad that she has saved enough capital to control the option.

"Life is short and beautiful. It would be a pity to spend most of your time working instead of sharing nature with relatives and friends and doing things that truly bring joy," she lamented.
