Is the West "funding" Russia? Zelensky railed: Russian missiles are stuffed with Western parts!

Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky recently issued a severe condemnation, pointing directly to the international community: In Russia's recent large-scale missile and drone attacks on Ukraine cities, the weapons used actually contained tens of thousands of "Western-made parts." He lambasted that global supply chains were inadvertently "funding" or "fueling" Moscow's war machine.

Although the international community has imposed severe sanctions on Russia for many years, high-tech parts and components from the United States, Europe and key allies in East Asia continue to flow into the Russian military industry.

Zelensky's anger stems from a recent round of large-scale air strikes launched by Russia. In an investigation announced afterwards, the Office of the President of Ukraine pointed out that an astonishing number of foreign-made parts were found in the wreckage.

In one massive attack, Russia used a total of 549 weapons systems, of which more than 102,785 foreign-made parts were detected.

The vast majority come from Iranian-made Shahd-136 suicide drones.

At the same time, key Western components have also been found in Russian high-precision missiles such as the “Iskander-K” and “Kalibr”.

Source countries of parts: including the United States, Britain, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan Province. Components involved include converters, sensors, microprocessors, power modules, and microcontrollers, among others.

Zelensky said in a public speech: “It’s absurd when someone claims ‘we don’t know how to stop the flow of these critical components.’We must stop all this immediately!” he stressed that as long as it cuts these ‘shameful supply chains,’ Russia’s war capabilities will be greatly weakened.

Many of the parts discovered are "dual-use items," such as certain U.S. -made microchips originally used in medical equipment or industrial automation; German-made sensors used in cars or robots; and semiconductors in Japan and South Korea, widely used in consumer electronics. These components are produced on a large scale around the world, and once they enter the commercial supply chain, their final destination is extremely difficult to trace.

On the other hand, while Western countries have banned exports of controlled goods directly to Russia, Russia has established a complex network of sanctions to circumvent:

Western companies legally sell their products to distributors in third countries, who then illegally resell them to Russian military enterprises at several times the price.

For example: an American chip may pass through Germany → United Arab Emirates → Turkey → Russia and eventually appear in the guidance system of the "Dagger" missile.

In response to this problem, the United States and the European Union are increasing pressure on financial institutions in transit countries. By threatening to exclude them from the US dollar settlement system (SWIFT), banks are forced to refuse to provide funding services for suspicious transactions.

By emphasizing the existence of "Western parts", Zelensky sent a strong signal to countries that support Ukraine: "Isn't it hypocrisy that you provide weapons assistance while allowing your technology to be used to build missiles that kill Ukraine?"

Although the United States and Europe have strengthened export controls, expanded blacklists and cracked down on transit networks, the challenges remain enormous.

Kiev believes that this continuous inflow of parts and components has enabled Russia to maintain military production and prolong the war, essentially making the West a "passive sponsor" of this war.

Zelensky’s public condemnation was not only a disclosure of technical problems, but also a well-designed geopolitical pressure.

But given the complexity of the problem, such phenomena should not see much improvement in the short term.
