In 1995, the Fourth United Nations World Conference on Women held in Beijing, adopted the milestone "Beijing Declaration" and "Action Programme", drawing a blueprint for development to promote gender equality and women's development, becoming a programmatic document guiding the global cause of women.

Thirty years later, the Global Women¡¯s Summit will be held in Beijing from 13 to 14 October, and the international community will once again focus on promoting global gender equality and the comprehensive development of women.

Several UN officials and experts said that for 30 years, China has practiced the spirit of the Beijing Women's Society, promoting historic achievements for Chinese women's cause, and joining with the United Nations to support the development of the world's women's cause.

The Beijing Declaration "gathers unity and wisdom"

On 9 October 2024, representatives from all countries gathered at the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council. then-Chairman of the Human Rights Council, Zneibel, asked: ¡°Is there anyone (by reason of objections) asking for a vote on the draft resolution?¡±

On the same day, the Human Rights Council officially adopted the 30th anniversary resolution adopted in commemoration of the joint submission by representatives of China and other countries, the Beijing Declaration and the Programme of Action.

Although the politicization and polarization atmosphere of the UN Human Rights Council has intensified in recent years, countries have broad consensus on revitalizing the spirit of the Beijing Declaration. A number of UN officials said that the resolution not only reflects the high recognition of the core concepts of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, but also once again confirms its cohesion and value of the times.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Turke said that the Beijing Declaration and the Programme of Action, a milestone in the history of women¡¯s rights and gender equality, were adopted 30 years ago, bringing together solidarity and wisdom.

The Beijing Declaration and the Programme of Action are not only a pledge, but a blueprint for action that has pushed more and more countries to recognize gender equality as an indispensable requirement for social development over the past 30 years, according to United Nations Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women.

Greenspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, paid tribute to the delegates who attended the 1995 Beijing Women's Congress. She said that it was the unremitting efforts of the delegates to inspire the development of the cause of women in the world that expanded the global awareness of gender equality and pushed countries to make changes at the level of policy and action.

China's practice "is an example for the world"

Spanning 145 countries and connecting 429 women's organizations and institutions, China is an advocate and activist in supporting the development of women's causes around the world. Nicole Ameline, former French Minister of Equity and Equal Employment Opportunities, who has served on several United Nations expert agencies, believes that China plays an active leading role in promoting women's rights around the world.

Beijing to "blow the horn of action again"

On September 8 this year, the Palace of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, standing representatives or senior diplomats of more than 100 countries in the UN Human Rights Council attended the high-level commemorative events of "Beijing + 30".

"In the past 30 years, the cause of protecting women's rights has made positive progress, but it still faces many challenges." Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, said that China will hold a global women's summit in Beijing in October this year, and China is willing to work with all parties to promote the healthy development of women's cause in the world with practical actions.

According to a report released by UN Women¡¯s Office in May this year, more than 2,8 million women and girls have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the new Israeli conflict, with an average of one woman and one girl killed every hour.Today, as many as 6,7 billion women and girls live in a deadly conflict threat, the highest since the end of the Cold War.

Philemon Young, President of the 79th UN General Assembly, said that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and "it is an excellent opportunity to sound the clarion call for action again".
