Xinhua Agency, Cairo, October 12 (Reporter Yao Bing) Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (Arab States) Gheit said on the 12th that the Gaza ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)"marks the beginning of an irreversible path towards realizing the 'two-state solution'."

Gheit said in a statement issued by the Arab League on the same day that the Gaza ceasefire agreement is very important to restarting the specific political process aimed at establishing an independent Palestinian state. He thanked the mediators for their efforts and believed that these efforts would help prevent further Palestinian bloodshed.

The statement said that Gates would attend the Sham Sheikh Peace Summit, which is expected to focus on consolidating the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and planning the follow-up to achieving lasting peace in the region.

Egypt is scheduled to hold a "peace summit" on the 13th in the Red Sea coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh, the site of ceasefire negotiations in the Gaza Strip. Egypt announced that it will be attended by "leaders of more than 20 countries".
