Just last week, the White House confirmed that the Trump administration was seeking to have a portrait of the president himself printed on the $1 commemorative coin, and that both sides of the coin would be a portrait of Trump.
According to U.S. Treasury officials, the $1 commemorative coin was issued to celebrate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence. According to the current design scheme, the front of the coin will be engraved on Trump’s side head, and the back is Trump’s action during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania when he suffered an assassination attempt – holding his fist tight.
The news came out and immediately sparked widespread controversy. Many believe that Trump did this completely beyond the scope of selfishness, has taken the path of personal worship, and his practice is also openly in breach of American law.
So, will the Treasury Department print Trump’s portrait on the coin next time?Is Trump doing this selfish, or does he really intend to use personal worship to rely on the White House?
According to regulations, the use of portraits of living presidents is prohibited
The use of the head image of a country’s leader or a well-known figure on a country’s currency is unlikely, but the current conventional practice is that similar currencies are usually issued only after his death.
In accordance with current U.S. laws, the use of portraits of living presidents is prohibited on circulating currencies, while the use of portraits of presidents who died less than two years ago is prohibited. In other words, all persons who have served as presidents in the United States may not be printed on circulating currencies until two years after their death.
However, it is not without exception that in the 1920s, in order to commemorate the 150th anniversary of U.S. independence, a 50-cent commemorative coin printed with the portrait of then-President Coliseum was issued, but this commemorative coin was not a circulating currency.
However, in 2020, the U.S. Congress passed a law allowing the Treasury Department to mint a $1 commemorative coin in 2026 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence. However, the law passed at that time limited the theme of commemorative coins, and the head or bust of any character could not be used on the back of the coin.
In other words, whether it’s the usual practice or the special case, Trump doesn’t have any legal basis to do so now, not only violating the rules, but also causing huge controversy.
Interestingly, 2020, exactly the last year of Trump’s first term, when the U.S. Congress specifically enacted such a bill, is likely to restrict Trump’s likelihood of printing his portrait on memorial coins.
Later, Biden won Trump in the White House, and people thought he finally got rid of Trump. But who could imagine, after just four years, Trump returned.
According to Trump’s personality, even if the law prohibits it, he will ignore it. Most importantly, this time is different from the previous, this time there are a lot of people who are devout to him.
Are there other countries printing Trump's portraits
There are more and more people who like what they like, and there are even countries that like what they like. Just this year, Liberia minted a commemorative coin with a face value of $1 and a weight of 1 ounce, with Trump's portrait printed on the obverse of the coin. Trump wears a golden bay leaf, looks like a Roman emperor, and it also says, We trust Trump.
For Trump, he is not satisfied with the use of his portrait in other countries. He prefers his portrait to appear on coins issued by the United States. Therefore, according to his personality, even if he violates the law, he will do it, not to mention that many people around him are doing what they like now.
Last week, officials of the U.S. Treasury Department made it clear that the design plan has come out, and as long as the U.S. government ends its shutdown, more details will be discussed next. Obviously, with Trump's acquiescence or instruction, someone within the government is already specializing in this matter.
In the past, people have always said that the West is too honest and not as honest as the Eastern civilization in terms of humanity. But what the Trump administration has now shown is clear that the West knows the humanity and is operative no less than the East.
In the end, what Trump wants is recognition, and more influence. Whether it’s printing portraits on coins or hanging his headpiece on government departments, the same purpose is to do so. Though there are clearly prohibited provisions, Trump sees it as a paper blank, and his continuous defeat is both provocative and tentative.
Thus, from this perspective, even if the United States often blames itself that their political architecture is constrained, it will not allow the existence of a privileged president. Now it seems that American selfishness is not speculative. The reason why no presidents like Trump have appeared before is because most people will not do it like Trump, which also mistakes Americans to believe their political architecture is effective.
From this point, it can be seen that the United States is really young and "naive" in the design of its political structure.
The appearance of Trump is inevitable.
The United States has only been founded over 200 years, from the base point of view, the number of presidents that appear is not enough, so the majority of previous presidents will basically not challenge the underlying rules, nor dare to imagine changing the rules, mainly because people still believe in the way this set of rules works.
The emergence of people like Trump now just shows that as the base expands, there will definitely be people who challenge the rules, which is unavoidable in any country and in any era.
Take a simple example, for example, in our country during the spring and autumn warfare period, even before the collapse of the grace, even in the war, it is necessary to follow the rules of the armed forces, and it is absolutely impossible to attack.
However, with the advent of the era of collapse of rites and music, the princes no longer follow the rules of the past. Song Xianggong used the original method in a battle, and was finally defeated by a sneak attack. He himself became the biggest laughter in that era. It can be seen from this incident that all rules can be changed, and once they do, they will not return to their original state.
The same is true of the situation facing the United States now. Although the law expressly stipulates that it is not allowed to print the portrait of the living president on the currency in circulation or commemorative coins, Trump has to challenge this provision, and there is a high probability that he will be successful in the challenge.
The reason the previous president did not dare to challenge this rule, is that people believe this set of rules, and now the Trump challenge, is precisely that this set of rules gradually fails and no longer trusted.
In other words, Trump's appearance is not accidental, but inevitable. Even without Trump, other similar figures will emerge, because the rules will expire and loosen. As long as this period is reached, different figures will definitely emerge.
The United States ushered in its own "collapse of rites and music"
During Trump's first term, there were studies that said he actually suffered from narcissistic personality disorder. In 2017, some experts published similar studies. This kind of person often shows arrogance and needs compliments from others anytime and anywhere. More importantly, this kind of person has no empathy.
This is very similar to the personality of Trump himself, who has always considered himself excellent and unique, not understood by others, and only interacted with other privileged or high-ranking people.
In May, Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, also a clinical psychologist, was more publicly quoted as saying that Trump is likely to have an anti-social personality, most afraid of being overlooked by others, he wants to be president for his life, and is unwilling to leave the White House after the end of his term.
Whether this claim is true or not, one thing can be assured is that Trump’s personality has influenced the administration and operation of the U.S. government to some extent. In other words, whether or not Trump’s own spirit exists, it is no longer a personal matter.
Therefore, if you look at it from a higher perspective, you will find that the United States is ushering in its own "collapse of etiquette and music." Because the political structure of any country should be adhered to in most cases, rather than being provoked at will.
What Trump has done since his first term is precisely to destroy rather than abide by. It's just that during his first term, he had little experience, and his actions didn't have a greater impact. But now it is different. He has both experience and supporters and obsequious.
He doesn’t care about the original rules and is more willing to bypass the rules, change the rules, establish his own rules. What he does now doesn’t seem to have a deadly impact on the United States yet, but the problem is that Trump is constantly trying through these other things.
Suppose that four years later, Trump really didn’t leave the White House, or that he took some other way to make himself seem justified to stay, and then what would the Americans do?
Some people will definitely feel that if Trump really does that, there will be some mechanism to restrict him or drive him away. But the problem is that this restriction mechanism does not take effect immediately. If this restriction mechanism is constantly provoked in peacetime, it will become unknown whether it can ultimately play a role.
Obviously, most Americans are not aware of this problem, because most of them still believe in the rules of the previous era and that all American politicians can abide by the American-style "ritual and music system".
That's exactly where the problem arises. Trump is already breaking the rules. Once he continues to deepen, he may really no longer be able to restrain him from now on.
conclusion
So the United States will also see its own grace collapse, and the appearance of characters like Trump is also inevitable. In this current situation, if Americans still want to follow the rules of the past, then no matter how small the destructive move Trump does, should immediately stop him, rather than let go and care.
Because once he keeps doing this, he will eventually dig a big hole in the rules. By that time, Trump will be able to go in and out at will, and Americans will have to pay an extremely high price to fill this hole, and even if they pay the price, they may not be able to fill it.
