Liam Salim, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, said at a press conference in response to media questions that the 1995 Beijing Declaration and the Programme of Action are very visionary and still a very important blueprint for protecting women and children.

Salim said that she had made the same statement at the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. She explained that the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action comprehensively explored discrimination and violence against women, and also served as a road map to achieve policies for women's progress, empowerment and equal participation.

Salim said that 30 years later, the Beijing Declaration is still of practical significance. People should re-understand, absorb and follow the goals put forward in the Beijing Declaration, return to the fundamentals and reaffirm their commitment to the Beijing Declaration.
