Denmark plans to invest $42.6 billion to strengthen defence in the Arctic and North Atlantic

The Danish Ministry of Defence said on October 10 that the Danish government and the parties to parliamentary defence consultations have agreed to invest 27.4 billion Danish crowns (about $42.6 billion) to strengthen defence and security capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic, such as Greenland, the Faroe Islands.

The Danish Ministry of National Defense said in a press release that the focus of this defense investment includes building a new Arctic Command headquarters in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, laying a North Atlantic submarine cable connecting Greenland and Denmark, adding two Arctic ships, introducing maritime patrol aircraft on demand, purchasing more multi-type drones, and setting up air situation early warning radar in eastern Greenland. Relevant investments will significantly enhance the Danish army's combat capabilities and mission execution capabilities in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions.

According to the Danish Ministry of National Defense, since this summer, the Danish military has increased the intensity of training in Greenland and its surrounding areas, deploying helicopter gunships, frigates, infantry and special operations units.

The Danish Defense Ministry also said it will spend 29 billion Danish crowns ($4.5 billion) on the purchase of 16 F-35 fighters.
