NATO military exercises next week will simulate possible use of nuclear weapons

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) announced on October 10 that NATO will start holding military exercises code-named "Fort Midnight" on October 13.NATO officials said the exercises would simulate a scenario of possible use of nuclear weapons, but the weapons equipment actually participated did not include nuclear weapons.

NATO said the exercise will last for about two weeks, with a total of 14 NATO member states participating, using bases in the Netherlands, Belgium, Britain and Denmark.

The "Firm Noon" exercise is NATO's routine annual exercise and has been held for more than 10 years. Jim Stokes, the official in charge of NATO nuclear policy, said the exercise was "not targeted at any country and was not related to any real-world events." However, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the exercise showed potential opponents that NATO will and can defend all allies from any threat and that NATO must ensure that its nuclear deterrent is reliable, safe and effective.
