World champion arrested for airport theft! Penalty announced

For theft of cosmetics at a Singapore airport store, Italian world swimming champion Benidita Pirato and a teammate were sentenced to a 90-day ban from the Italian swimming federation.

Pilato, 20, is the women's 100m breaststroke champion of the 2022 World Swimming Championships. She won the third place in the women's 50m breaststroke competition of the World Swimming Championships held in Singapore in August this year.

After participating in the competition in Singapore, pilato and his 23-year-old teammate chiara tarantino went to Bali, Indonesia for a holiday. When returning home and passing through Singapore Changi International Airport, tarantino stuffed several bottles of essential oil into pilato's bag in a duty-free shop.

This scene was photographed by a surveillance camera, and the two men were detained, but then released and returned to China under the coordination of the Italian Embassy.

The Italian Swimming Federation issued a statement on the 9th, saying that the two people were punished based on the recommendation of the Italian prosecutor and banned for 90 days starting on the 9th. AFP said this meant they would not be able to compete in a European short course swimming championship to be held in Poland in December.
