Breaking-News >> WorldNews Foreign media: The International Criminal Court rejected former Philippine President Duterte's release request and ruled that he would remain in custody
According to AFP, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 10 local time, rejected the release application submitted by the defence team of the former Philippine president Duterte on health grounds, and ruled his continued detention. In the ruling, the ICC said: “The (pre-trial) division believes that the detention of Duterte is still necessary.” Duterte launched an anti-drug campaign during his tenure as mayor and president of Davao, Philippines. In February 2018, the International Criminal Court informed the Philippine government that it would conduct a "preliminary investigation" into whether there were human rights violations in the anti-drug crimes led by Duterte. The Philippines has officially withdrawn from the International Criminal Court in 2019. Duterte was detained by the police after returning from abroad and arriving at Manila International Airport on March 11th this year, and the relevant authorities showed him the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court. The plane carrying Duterte arrived in The Hague on March 12th, and Duterte attended the first hearing held by the International Criminal Court via video link on March 14th.
