Reference News Network reported on October 8 According to Agence France-Presse reported on October 7, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on the 7th that in a lawsuit filed with the International Criminal Court, she was charged with "conspiracy to commit genocide." The lawsuit accuses the Roman government of supporting Israel's bombing of the Gaza Strip.
According to reports, Meloni said in comments broadcast by local media that her name appeared in a document from a Palestinian advocacy group that accused her and others of conspiring to provide weapons to Israel.
She said the complaint also listed the names of Italian Defence Minister Guido Croseto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
According to reports, UN investigators have accused Israel of committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has been fighting Hamas for two years.
The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Joab Garant, both of whom face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity over Israeli military operations in Gaza, but the International Criminal Court has not yet prosecuted them for genocide. The Palestinian rights advocacy group, which has filed a lawsuit against Meloni, has called on the International Criminal Court to assess the possibility of a formal investigation into the allegations.
The complaint, dated Oct. 1, was signed by about 50 people, including law professors, lawyers and several public figures. "By supporting the Israeli government, particularly by providing lethal weapons, the Italian government has become complicit in the ongoing genocide and in the extremely serious war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinian people," the document reads.
In a commentary broadcast on television, Meloni said: “I don’t think there has been such a case in the world or in history.”
