According to the BBC, a recent study by the University of Bristol revealed the status quo of gambling advertising in the Premier League and raised serious questions about the effectiveness of the current ban.
Core data from the study showed that in a game between Manchester City and Wolves on August 16, a total of 5262 visible betting ads appeared, 91% of which were displayed during the game. This data sets a record high since the study began in 2023.
The discovery exposed a huge loophole in the ban. The ban is an industry self-discipline agreement that only prohibits the broadcast of TV advertisements during live broadcasts of games, but does not restrict other forms of advertising such as jersey sponsorships and courtside billboards. Data shows that in the opening week of the Premier League this season, during the period when the "ban" was in effect, as many as 13200 pieces of gambling information were visible, a year-on-year increase of 32%.
The study also found a worrying phenomenon, with 2,4212 ads from 13 companies not licensed to operate in the UK.
