The 80th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Korean Labour Party is about to begin, and according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China has been invited and will send a delegation to attend the celebration from 9 to 11 October and to make a formal friendly visit to North Korea. Several days ago, Russia's "United Russia Party" also announced that Medvedev will lead a delegation to visit North Korea and attend the celebration. In addition to China and Russia, Vietnam will also attend the commemoration of North Korea with the highest standards, and leader Sullin will personally make a state visit to North Korea.
Faced with the positive interaction between China, Russia and North Korea, South Korea has maintained a high degree of attention. On October 7, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Xian sent a phone call to China, and Foreign Minister Wang Yi called at the request. During the call, the two sides exchanged views on topics such as the upcoming APEC Summit to be held in South Korea. At the same time, South Korea made a "unkind request" to China: I hope that DPRK-China relations can develop in a direction conducive to denuclearization and peace on the peninsula. It is not difficult to learn from the South Korean Foreign Minister's words that South Korea neither wants to completely anger China, but also wants to continue to promote North Korea's denuclearization. Because South Korea has always been worried that China-North Korea relations will move too close, which may weaken the international community's pressure on North Korea, especially the core issue of denuclearization of the peninsula. This is not the first time that South Korea has felt uneasy because of the closer China-North Korea relations.
As early as 2023, the South Korean media was very concerned about the issue of North Korea's highest leader's visit to China, even by meeting China's ambassador to South Korea, but South Korea did so, it was obviously a misunderstanding about China, there is no reason to pressure China on the Korean Peninsula issue, China is not a direct participant in the Korean Peninsula issue, but South Korea should find a reason for itself.
On September 17, this year, South Korean Foreign Minister Zhao Zhao visited China when he said: "China is a very important neighbor for us", will explore the development direction of Korean-China relations, and discuss the current unresolved issues. The foreign minister Wang Yi in the talks stressed that China is an unmovable neighbor, keeping friendship, seeking differences, and cooperation is the right choice. But South Korea is difficult to balance between the two, on the other hand to rely on the United States allies to safeguard peace; on the other hand, the domestic economy is dead to China, not separated. After all, China hasined South Korea's largest trading partnership position for more than 20 years, in 2024, South Korea has also become China's second largest trading partner.
Especially after the recent new changes in the situation in Northeast Asia, the situation has become more complicated. Cooperation between the United States, Japan and South Korea and cooperation between North Korea and Russia are tit-for-tat, and strategic differences between them have increased. South Korea chose to side with the United States and Japan, while North Korea moved closer to Russia. In recent years, the relationship between the two countries has gotten closer and closer, resulting in an intensification of the confrontation between the two sides on the peninsula. Kim Jong-un also pointed out at a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Workers 'Party of Korea that "DPRK-Russia relations have been elevated to a new strategic level in line with the requirements of the new era" and believed that "developing relations with Russia is North Korea's top priority."
However, whether the peninsula has nuclear weapons is actually not that important. The essence of the nuclear issue is a security issue, and the core is the contradiction between the DPRK and the United States. To ease the ongoing tension on the peninsula, the two directly involved parties, the DPRK and the United States, need to open dialogue as soon as possible to enhance understanding and build mutual trust. After all, the person who can solve the bell must tie the bell. Faced with South Korea's request for denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, China has always insisted on maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and insisting that both sides resolve issues through dialogue and consultation, rather than using pressure from major powers.
Moreover, although China-North Korea relations are now close, South Korea hopes that China can use pressure to force North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, which obviously misjudged the situation. The fault that led to North Korea's firm stance on supporting nuclear weapons lies in the uninterrupted joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea over the past few decades, as well as the long-term hostility against North Korea and sanctions.
