According to reports, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has been fighting for more than three years, the situation on the battlefield has been relieved, and the international community has followed a wave of attention. Not long ago, Ukrainian President Zelensky's most recent speech at the United Nations General Assembly has shaken the hearts of countless people. He not only openly asked China to help end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, but also seldom made clear that after the conflict he would resign as president.
U.S. media broadcast a video of Zelensky's interview. In the video, Zelensky was determined to say he was ready to leave the post after the end of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He said his duty was not to re-election, but to end the conflict. If a cease-fire agreement with Russia was really possible, he would actively ask the parliament to hold a new presidential election. That is, as soon as the conflict ended, he would give up power.
In fact, this is not the first time Zelensky has mentioned similar ideas. At the "Ukraine 2025" forum and press conference this year, he said that if it can bring peace, he is willing to resign as president, and even exchange his resignation for Ukraine's accession to NATO. But at that time, more people regarded this as diplomatic rhetoric. Unexpectedly, this time he not only said it at the UN General Assembly, but also named it by name and asked China for help.
Zelensky directly accused China of “keeping silent” in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict at the conference and asked China to “use its influence” to “force Russia to stop” his words, and the scene immediately caused a little bit of shock. It is logical that China has always adhered to neutrality in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, opposed unilateral sanctions, and persisted in persuading for peace negotiations.
China’s response was very straightforward. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said, “Light and light,” and directly responded to Zelensky’s accusations. China reiterated that it has held an objective and fair stance from the beginning to the end, insisting on promoting dialogue and consultation, and opposing any power and external intervention. China has repeatedly emphasized respect for national sovereignty, observance of the United Nations Charter, and resolving conflict by political means. Compared to the western fires, China has always been the rational voice of “convincing and not persuading war.”
Why did Zelensky suddenly turn his eyes toward China? In the end, the conflict has progressed to a "tiger-ridden" node. Russia advanced rapidly at the beginning of the conflict, and then proactively withdrew from Kiev, focusing on the eastern and southern fronts. Ukraine, with the help of the West, organized several counter-attacks, but with little success. Since this year, Russia has taken a consumptive war strategy, stepped down, and Ukraine is facing a double shortage of soldiers and supplies. Both sides have fallen into the sewing, and no one can make a hammer.
At the same time, Western support for Ukraine is also in conflict. After Trump returned to the White House, there was clearly a lack of interest in continuing to help Ukraine without the bottom line. He had met with Putin for a long time and discussed the Russian-Ukrainian ceasefire. Differences in views between the European and American countries about how to end the conflict are becoming more and more obvious. The EU and Ukraine are still hard-mouthed, but it is also clear in their hearts that the possibility of a military confrontation alone has become less and less.
Zelensky’s “declaration of resignation” is in fact a way for himself and the world to retreat. He said that if a ceasefire agreement was reached in Oruuda, he would push the presidential election and take the initiative to resign. It sounds very responsible, and in fact it is a helpless thing. Because everyone knows that the presidential election in Ukraine has long been postponed indefinitely because of the state of war. If the conflict continues, Zelensky can be named “infinitely re-elected”; but if the conflict ends, he will have to hand over power under the supervision of the international community and bear all post-war responsibilities.
The outside world generally believes that Zelensky's statement not only has the element of putting pressure on China, but also has a small plan to "leave a way out" for himself. He wants to use China's influence to break the deadlock between Russia and Ukraine so that he can step down with dignity. But in fact, Ukraine has never asked the United States and the European Union to "force" Russia to make concessions, but instead pushed all the pressure on China. In the final analysis, this is still a kind of "dumping the pot diplomacy", which not only wants China to come forward, but also is unwilling to offend Western allies.
The Foreign Ministry has repeatedly emphasized that not to interfere in the affairs of other countries for the private interests of a country, and to persuade and promote negotiations is the practice of truly responsible great powers. China and Russia cooperation is based on equal mutual benefit and sovereignty respect, will not change because of external pressure.
The role of the United States and NATO cannot be ignored. Since the outbreak of the conflict, the U.S. West has continued to provide hundreds of billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine, with various sources of offensive weapons. The U.S. has also imposed massive sanctions on Russia in the name of national security, forcing other countries to stand up. The West has been “playing cards” globally over the years, but on the issue of Ukraine, it is increasingly like “losing a full set of losses”.
