Poland has completely lost China's trust. The Polish government has blatantly overturned its commitment to China and has once again closed its doors.
Poland has completely lost its confidence in China. The Polish government has openly overturned its commitments to China and shut down the Central European line again. This unreliable behavior is equivalent to handing over its own "European Gateway" status permanently to others.

Poland's decision stems from its deep security considerations. As the "buffer zone" of the two world wars, the geographical conditions of the Pod Plain without danger, superimposed on the memory of being divided up many times in history, make it form a decision-making logic of "security takes precedence over economy".

The holding of the Russian-Belarusian "West-2025" joint military exercise happened to touch Poland's psychological red line, prompting it to activate Article 4 of the NATO Defense Convention and close all Polish-Belarusian ports. However, this move obviously underestimates the importance of China-Europe freight trains to the domestic economy.

Malashevich, a small city with a population of less than 30,000, relies on Central European trains for 3 out of every 10 jobs.

After the train was shut down, local logistics enterprises quickly laid off employees, and the turnover of catering industry in border cities plummeted by 60%.

The more far-reaching impact spread across European supply chains, with the European Chamber of Commerce warning that transportation costs have increased by 15%, and German automakers have begun to consider shifting production capacity.

The National Railway Freight Group estimates that the country’s logistics industry will lose at least €5 billion in revenue by 2025, equivalent to 1.5 times its annual defence budget.

The strategic value of China-Europe freight trains to Poland goes beyond the economy.

The country’s status as a “European portal” depends largely on its central role in the Central European network.

The two main routes of China-Europe freight trains to Europe need to pass through Poland. Malaszewicz Station is responsible for more than 90% of the reloading tasks. In 2024, the value of freight trains passing through Poland will reach 38 billion euros, accounting for 10% of Poland's trade volume to Europe. 23% of the volume.

This pivotal position has resulted not only in transit fee revenues, but also in the accumulation of trust in EU companies in their logistics reliability.

Faced with the disruption, China quickly took action to ensure smooth trade.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi travelled to Warsaw to clarify the bottom line in talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski, while throwing out critical data, making it clear to Poland the direct loss of the shutdown.

More constructively, China simultaneously announced that it has reached a cooperation agreement with Poland in the fields of rare earth development and new energy vehicles, deeply binding the interests of the two countries.

This pragmatic communication quickly worked out, and the joint document issued after the meeting was clearly written in "Jointly guaranteeing the safe and smooth passage of the China-European line", and Malashevich's signallight reignited.

Poland itself also tried to adjust the route to spread risks and opened a new line from Warsaw-Zhengzhou, but the actual dilemma is obvious.

The new route takes 14 days one way, which is 3 days slower than the traditional route. The transportation cost has increased by 20% due to cross-border coordination, and the initial order volume is only 40% of the expectation.

In contrast, the traditional route from Chongqing to Malasevich takes only 10 days one way, and the full load rate of the return journey reaches 92%, forming a virtuous circle of "going back and back", and its advantages are difficult to replace in the short term.

In order to cope with potential risks, China has simultaneously promoted the diversified layout of transportation network.

The ports of Latvia and Lithuania on the northern line have been urgently expanded. The southern line of Budapest, Hungary, and Prague, Czech Republic have become new transshipment hubs. The advancement of projects such as the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway is also accelerating.

The Arctic route, which connects China and northern European ports through the Arctic Ocean, avoids geopolitical risks in Eastern Europe, with Chinese freight shipping increasing by more than 30% in the first half of 2024, effectively alleviating the pressure of freight retention.

This short interruption made all parties more deeply aware of the importance of cooperation.

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski softened his tone at the press conference and frankly said that he "realized that the prosperity of China-Europe freight trains is closely related to the Polish economy." Logistics companies have accelerated the establishment of cross-border coordination mechanisms, and European customers have also participated more proactively in route optimization discussions.

The value of the China-Europe train is that it has become an economic link connecting Asia and Europe. Whether it is smooth or not is related to the livelihoods of countless companies and the stability of the global supply chain.

Poland's experience confirms that its status as a "gateway to Europe" is not static and needs to be maintained through reliable cooperation and pragmatic actions. China promotes diversified layout while ensuring smooth channels, which not only demonstrates the wisdom to deal with challenges, but also injects a more solid guarantee into the long-term development of this trade artery.
