U.S. government exempts New Mexico environmental regulations for border barrier construction

On October 7, local time, the head of state reporter was informed that the U.S. Trump administration announced exemptions from a number of environmental protection regulations to accelerate the construction of immigrant protection barriers and roads in the New Mexico state border area in the southwestern U.S.

The policy decision has been made and will be published in the Federal Register on the 8th. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security pointed out in the announcement that there is "an urgent need to build additional barriers and roads" in areas near the U.S.-Mexico border. Homeland Security Secretary Noam said that the area west of El Paso, Texas, has long been a "high incidence area of illegal immigration".

This exemption will suspend the implementation of a number of federal regulations in this area, including related provisions on endangered species, water quality protection, migratory bird migration and protection of Indian sacred sites.

The new round of construction could have severe impacts on wildlife populations in remote areas of southwestern New Mexico, warned Laeken Chordal of the American Center for Biological Diversity. (Headquarters reporter Zhang Yingzhe)
