Egyptian media: The first meeting between Hamas and mediators ended in a "positive atmosphere"

According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao on October 7, the delegations of Israel and Hamas held the first day of indirect negotiations on the 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Trump in Egypt on October 6, local time, and discussed thorny issues such as Israel's withdrawal and Hamas's disarmament. Reuters quoted Egyptian official media as saying that the first meeting between Hamas and the mediator ended in a "positive atmosphere".

According to reports, the negotiations were held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh. Egyptian state television reported that delegations from Egypt, the United States and Qatar also participated as mediators. Egyptian sources say Hamas wants Israel to ensure that it will still abide by the agreement after the hostages are released.

Al-Qahera News, which is linked to Egypt's national intelligence agency, reported that the negotiations will continue on the 7th local time.

At present, both Israel and Hamas acknowledge that the overall principle of Trump’s “20-point plan” – stopping fighting, releasing hostages and providing aid to the Gaza Strip – has also been supported by Arab countries and Western nations.

Trump has also publicly appealed to both sides: “I think we really have a great opportunity to promote this deal, and it will be a lasting deal.”

But both sides are seeking to clarify some of the key details of the 20-point plan, including those that have hindered multiple previous mediation efforts that could make it difficult for the Israeli conflict to end quickly.
