Cholera outbreak in Chad has killed 150 people

Xinhua Agency, United Nations, October 7 (Reporter Pan Yunzhao) UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Diyarik said on the 7th that the African country of Chad has reported more than 2600 suspected cases of cholera and nearly 150 deaths. The United Nations has recently allocated US$1 million to deal with this round of epidemic.

Diyarik said that the cholera epidemic mainly affects the neighboring provinces of Ouaddai, Sila and Guera in southeastern Chad. Among them, Waddai and Sila provinces host a large number of people displaced by the internal conflict in neighboring Sudan. Judging from case data, the potential case fatality rate of this round of epidemic is 6%, which is much higher than the 1% emergency threshold defined by the World Health Organization.

Dujarric said that Tom Fletcher, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the United Nations, has allocated $1 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund, as a supplement to the previous allocation of $3 million, mainly to improve water supply and sanitation facilities, provide medical support and strengthen community participation to curb the spread of diseases.

Since this year, the UN Central Emergency Fund has allocated $11 million to tackle the cholera outbreak in five African countries, including Chad.
