Japan Central Power Company said on October 7 local time that it has officially started the reactor demolition project of the unit 1 of the Yamaguchi Nuclear Power Plant, which is undergoing decommissioning operations in the city of御前崎 in Shizuoka County.This is the second commercial nuclear power unit in Japan to enter the reactor actual demolition stage after the unit 2 of Yamaguchi Nuclear Power Plant in March this year.
This operation belongs to the third of the four stages of decommissioning of nuclear power plants. Chubu Electric Power plans to complete the dismantling of the reactor body by fiscal year 2035 and complete all scrapping work, including the demolition of the plant, by fiscal year 2042.
According to Chubu Electric Power, on the morning of the 7th, the staff used a crane to remove the upper cover of the reactor pressure vessel. Previously, all the used nuclear fuel in the reactor has been taken out, and the disassembly of major structures such as pressure vessels and containment vessels will be promoted one after another.
