Lula calls for US to lift tariffs

According to the announcement issued by the Brazilian Presidential Office on 6 October, Brazilian President Lula made an ordinary phone call with the U.S. President on the morning of 6 local time, again asking the United States to lift tariffs on Brazilian imported U.S. products.

According to the announcement, the 30-minute call was “friendly” and Lula called for the US to lift the 40% tariffs on Brazilian products and restrictions on Brazilian officials.

The announcement said that Trump appointed U.S. Secretary of State Rubio to jointly advance follow-up negotiations with the Pakistani side. Pakistani negotiators include Vice President Arquimene, Foreign Minister Vera and Treasury Minister Fernando Ade.

Lula expressed willingness to visit the United States, suggested that the two leaders meet during the ASEAN summit in Malaysia, and invited Trump to attend the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Brazil in November.

The announcement also said that the two leaders exchanged private contact methods “to establish direct communication channels”.

In an interview with the US media on the same day, Trump said that the call was "very pleasant", but did not respond to whether the tariffs imposed on Brazilian goods would be lifted.

Trump also tweeted on social media that day that the two countries would continue to discuss the relevant topics of the conversation, noting that the two sides would meet “in the near future,” “whether in Brazil or the United States.”

Brazil’s Vice President Arquimedes told Brazilian media that Lula pointed out in the call that the U.S. sanctions on Brazilian officials were unfair.Arquimedes believed the call had better results than the Brazilian government expected and said the two sides would open up follow-up consultations on tariffs.
