International Atomic Energy Agency: Nuclear safety risks at Zaporozhya nuclear power plant intensify

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a statement on October 6 that the day near the Zaporozhye Thermal Nuclear Power Plant was shot and the nuclear security risk increased.

The statement quoted the agency's team at the nuclear power plant as saying that the shelling occurred in the afternoon and the shells landed near the nuclear power plant. Zaporizhzhia's nuclear power plant immediately informed the IAEA team that an area near the nuclear power plant was shelled by two rounds, and there are no reports of casualties or losses.

Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, issued a statement saying that the nuclear safety and security situation has obviously not improved. On the contrary, risks are intensifying. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has lost off-site power for nearly two weeks and has been forced to use emergency diesel generators to cool shut-down reactors and spent fuel. The current situation is facing severe challenges.

Grossie called on the conflicting parties to maintain maximum military restraint near the nuclear facility and said it would continue to communicate with Russia and Ukraine to restore power off-site to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant as soon as possible.

The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant is one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe. After the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022, the Russian side took control of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant. Since then, the nuclear power plant has been repeatedly bombarded or attacked by drones, raising international concerns about its safety. Since September 23, the nuclear power plant has been operating for several days in a row with reserve diesel generators.
