The theme of this year¡¯s World Population Day is ¡°City Response to Crisis¡±.Guterres said that in a rapidly urbanising world, cities tend to suffer from various crises, conflicts, political unrest and climate emergencies have forced hundreds of millions of people to leave their homes, most seeking asylum in cities.

Guterres said that solutions to the crisis should be sought through urban development. He called on cities to show inclusion for new immigrants, to provide solutions in improving housing, water supply and sanitation, while also paying attention to the role of local governments in improving the resilience of urban communities.

In December 1985, the 40th United Nations General Assembly designated the first Monday in October every year as World Habitat Day, aiming to raise people's attention to the human living environment and basic rights such as adequate housing for all.
