Breaking-News >> WorldNews Syria Announces First Results of Legislative Elections After Political Changes
Xinhua News Agency, Damascus, October 6 (Reporter Ji Ze, Cheng Shuaipeng) On the 6th, the Supreme Council of Syria's Legislative Election announced the results of the first legislative election after the drastic political changes. Mohammed Taha Ahmed, head of the committee, told media in the capital Damascus that the election elected 119 seats from 49 constituencies across Syria. The 21 seats allocated in Suweida Province in the south, Raqqa and Hasakeh provinces in the northeast are temporarily vacant. The result is the final result of the election and cannot be appealed. He said that the election process was "transparent and inclusive", but he also admitted that the election results were under-represented in terms of gender and religion. He said that the role of the Syrian legislature will be "as the official platform for national dialogue", supporting the administrative body and supervising its performance in the political transition process. Under the provisional election system issued by the Syrian regime, the Syrian legislature consists of 210 seats, one-third of which, 70 seats, are directly appointed by the Syrian regime’s leader, Ahmed Saleh, and the remaining 140 seats are allocated to 60 electoral districts in 14 provinces across the country. For security reasons, elections have been postponed in parts of the provinces of Suveda, Rakhine and Kazakhstan. Currently, much of the province is controlled by the local armed Druze factions, while many areas of Rakhine and Kazakhstan are controlled by the Kurdish-dominated “Syrian Democratic Forces”. The Supreme Council of the Syrian Legislature Election sets up local election committees in each constituency, and the local election committees select professionals and famous people in the constituency to set up "electoral bodies". Only members of the "electoral bodies" are eligible to stand for election and vote. The legislative elections are an important step in the political transition process in Syria. The Syrian regime has faced many challenges in the political, security and economic spheres since the dramatic political change in December last year, and a number of minorities and ethnic groups have blamed the new regime-led political transition process for lack of inclusion.
