Madagascar President Appoints New Prime Minister

Madagascar President Rajoelina appointed Luffen Fortina Zafisambo as the country's new prime minister on the evening of the 6th, replacing the previously dismissed Prime Minister Encai.

Rajoelina emphasized that the new prime minister must help the country "restore order" and regain the trust of the people. The top priority at present is to solve the water and power supply problem as soon as possible.

Zafisambo was born in the army and has served as the director of the Military Office of the Prime Minister's Office since 2021.

Since 25 September, mass demonstrations have erupted in several cities in Madagascar, including the capital, Tananarivo, in protest of frequent water shortages. Violence in shops, residential houses,, robbery and firing has resulted in casualties and property losses. On 29 September, La Jolina apologized to the public on behalf of the government, acknowledging that many needs and expectations were “not met or fully considered” and announcing “the termination of the functions of the Prime Minister and all members of the government”.
