On January 16, 1979, King Pahlavi, who had ruled Iran for 37 years, excitedly bid farewell to the people at Mehrabad Airport and left Iran for Egypt. Ayatollah Khomeini, the religious leader who is about to return home, adopts a free attitude towards the king. King Pahlavi said before leaving: "I hope the government will mend its past mistakes and successfully lay the foundation for the future." Tears welled up in his eyes as two King's soldiers knelt down and kissed his shoes. The king described his departure as a vacation abroad, but many doubt he will return to the country he has ruled for 37 years.

Today in Tehran, Prime Minister Shapur-Bakhtiar agreed to Khomeini's return to his motherland from his exile in Paris. Bakhtiar was forced to abandon his original insistence that Ayalatou could not establish a competing revolutionary government. A spokesman said, "We have to let him back and hope we can succeed."

Born in Tehran in 1919, the son of the former king.

Educated in Switzerland in 1931.

He entered the Tehran Military School in 1936.

After graduating in 1938, he became second lieutenant prosecutor of the Royal Army.

He was succeeded to the throne in September 1941 (crowned in October 1967).

On January 16, 1979, he was forced to flee under the pressure of the anti-king movement launched by Khomeini, and the dynasty was overthrown.

Exiled into Panama in December 1979.

During his reign, he strengthened the monarchy's dictatorship, seized power, and replaced 23 prime ministers to try to revive the "Great Persian Empire".
