Poland extends border controls with Germany and Lithuania

Poland's decree extending the temporary border control measures with Germany and Lithuania for six months came into force on October 5, and the control measures will continue until April 4, 2026.

According to Polish media reports, Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kelvinski signed the decree on 1 January. At a press conference after the German Munich Immigration Conference, he said that Poland was reluctant to agree to any provisions regarding the resettlement of migrants within the EU. Poland has paid a high price in protecting the external borders of the EU, and since this year, there have been 250,000 illegal border crossings between Poland and Belarus.

In order to curb the entry of illegal immigrants, the Polish government implemented 30-day temporary control measures on the borders between the west and Germany, and the northeast and Lithuania from July 7th, and then announced the extension of control until October 4th.

At present, Poland has set up 50 checkpoints on the Polish-German border and 13 checkpoints on the Polish-German border.
