Breaking-News >> WorldNews Syria holds its first legislative election after political upheaval
On October 5, Syria held its first legislative election after a dramatic change in the Executive Bureau, with 1,600 candidates running in about 50 electoral districts across the country. Nawal Najme, spokesman of the Supreme Council for the Election of the Syrian Legislature, told the Syrian National News Agency on the 4th that the voting started at 9: 00 local time on the 5th and ended at 12: 00 local time, and can be extended to 16: 00 at most under special circumstances. The official results of the election will be announced on the 6th or 7th. According to the provisional electoral system for the legislature issued by the Syria regime, the Syrian legislature consists of 210 seats, of which one-third, or 70 seats, are directly appointed by the leader of the Syrian regime, Ahmed Shara, and the remaining 140 seats are allocated to 60 electoral districts in 14 provinces across the country. Due to security considerations, elections in parts of Suweida Province in southern Syria, Raqqa and Hasakeh provinces in northeastern Syria were postponed. Currently, most of Suweida Province is controlled by local Druze armed factions, and many areas in Raqqa and Hasakeh provinces are controlled by the "Syria Democratic Forces" led by Kurdish armed forces. The Supreme Council of the Syrian Legislature Election sets up local election committees in each constituency, and the local election committees select professionals and famous people in the constituency to set up "electoral bodies". Only members of the "electoral bodies" are eligible to stand for election and vote. The legislative elections are an important step in the political transition process in Syria. The Syrian regime has faced many challenges in the political, security and economic spheres since the dramatic political change in December last year, and a number of minorities and ethnic groups have blamed the new regime-led political transition process for lack of inclusion.
