On the night of October 4 local time,Lithuania's capital Vilnius airport closed due to suspicion of a hot balloon in its airspaceIt was reopened at about 5 a.m. the following day, with several flights being changed or cancelled.

The management of Vilnius Airport, the largest airport in Lithuania, said on social media Facebook that "because there may be multiple hot air balloons flying to the airport", the airport operator closed the airport airspace at 22: 16 local time on the 4th. Air traffic resumed at 4: 50 am on the 5th.

Lithuanian National Radio and Television quoted the head of the national crisis management department as saying,On the evening of the 4th, 13 hot air balloons flew to Vilnius Airport.

It is unclear where these hot air balloons came from.

According to the airport, at least 10 flights were affected by airspace closures, departures were forced to be cancelled, and several passenger planes from London, Germany, Frankfurt and Vienna, Austria, turned to nearby Latvia and Poland.

European air traffic has been disrupted several times in recent weeks by the presence of drones near airports, most recently at Munich Airport in Germany. Munich Airport was shut down for two consecutive nights earlier this month due to the discovery of drones, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
