White House: Trump decides to deploy National Guard to Chicago

U.S. White House spokesman Abigail Jackson said on October 4 that U.S. President Trump decided to deploy the National Guard to the city of Chicago, Illinois, authorizing the dispatch of 300 National Guard personnel to protect Chicago's federal officials and assets.

Jackson said in a statement that Trump made the decision because the local government has not calmed the “continuing violent riots.”

Pritzker, the governor of *, Ill., posted on social media that day to confirm that the Trump administration had ordered him to deploy the State National Guard in Chicago. "This morning, the Trump administration's' Department of War 'gave me an ultimatum: Gather your troops or we'll do it."

Pritzker also said: "(Trump) asking a governor to send troops in our state against his will is absolutely intolerable and un-American. I will not call the National Guard to fuel Trump's aggression against our people."

In the past few weeks, Trump has repeatedly threatened to send troops to Chicago to participate in immigration enforcement and crack down on crimes. Previously, Trump had sent troops to Los Angeles and Washington, which encountered strong resistance.

In late September, Secretary of Defense ("Secretary of War") Hagerseth authorized 200 Oregon National Guard members to perform federal functions for 60 days in Portland. Oregon and the city of Portland have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration. On October 4, a federal judge in Oregon issued a temporary restraining order preventing the federal government from deploying the National Guard to Portland.
