Three main reasons for Hamas to agree to release hostages to hand over power, not to mention the establishment of a Palestinian state

The fighting in Gaza has dragged on for almost two years. From the beginning of Hamas's raid on Israel on October 7, 2023, to now on October 3, 2025, there is finally a turning point. Hamas suddenly announced that it would accept Trump's 20-point Middle East peace plan, agree to release all 48 hostages, and hand over power to a Palestinian technocratic organization. As soon as this news came out, there was a lot of discussion in the international community, because Hamas had always insisted on establishing a Palestinian state in every negotiation in the past. This statement did not mention a word about establishing a state, but only talked about hostage release, arms transfer and security conditions for Israel's withdrawal. To put it bluntly, this move was too realistic, and Hamas obviously couldn't withstand it. Let's take a look at the three main reasons behind it. These things are all solid facts based on public reports and official statements, and there is no moisture.

Let's talk about the first reason, that is, Trump's ultimatum is under too much pressure. On the morning of October 3, Trump spoke directly at the White House and drew a red line for Hamas: it must respond to the plan before 6 p.m. on October 5, otherwise the United States will fully support Israel in launching an unprecedented strike. This is not just a casual remark. As soon as Trump started his second term, he announced the draft 20-point plan on September 16, which included the release of all hostages, the demilitarization of Gaza, and reconstruction assistance. Without waiting for the deadline, Hamas replied through Doha channels a few hours later and agreed to the general framework of the plan.

Why so quickly? Because the Israeli ground operations did not stop in the months before, and the Hamas command chain was broken several times. In May, Israel launched a large-scale offensive, precisely to force Hamas to release people, when the internal supply lines of Hamas were cut short. Again, on April 19, the Israeli Defense Minister openly said to increase military pressure on Hamas, rocket stockpiles and ground network losses were severe. Hamas used hostages as codes to exchange prisoners, this announcement came out, and their negotiating space was directly compressed to zero. Reports showed that Hamas emphasized "field conditions" and "security arrangements" in a statement, but was the core release, which indicated that they knew they would continue to hold hard, leadership and armed forces would break further.

The second reason is that Hamas has become completely alone, with no external backing. Looking at the Arab countries, on October 3, foreign ministers from Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt held a meeting at the United Nations headquarters in New York and jointly issued a communiqué in support of the Trump plan. These countries had provided financial and political assistance to Hamas in the past, but this time they collectively stood for a ceasefire, emphasizing ending the fighting and rebuilding stability. Qatar and Egypt, as the main mediators, had already promoted similar proposals on August 18. Hamas accepted Egypt's 60-day ceasefire proposal at that time, but it failed. Now they openly welcome Hamas 'response, which is tantamount to blocking Hamas' retreat. The Iranian side was even more extreme. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's office remained silent from beginning to end, had no condemnation plan, and did not encourage Hamas to continue fighting as before.

At the beginning of the war in 2023, Iran also provided funding and weapons support, but by 2025, there were no public statements, and Hamas’ communication channels were estimated to be cold. China, Russia and the European Union followed the statements of support, and the world’s Muslim nations like Indonesia did not stand out to help. This situation left Hamas without a backdrop, in the past they relied on Iran and Qatar’s transfer assistance, and now the aid fleet was intercepted by Israel, 42 ships seized more than 450 people, materials could not enter. Hamas said in a statement that the start of negotiations to ensure the security after the transfer of weapons, but did not build a country, is because it knew no one would pay for this order.

The third reason is that Israel has fought too hard for Hamas to win. As soon as Trump's plan came out, Israel did not stop, but increased its actions. On 2 and 3 October, they advanced in northern Gaza, gaining more territory, intercepting aid convoys in the Mediterranean and seizing ships carrying medical and food supplies. This is not the first time. In the first half of 2025, Israel blocked many times in a similar way, and Hamas rocket launchers and tunnel entrances were mostly blown up. Take March, for example, when the Israeli Air Force dispatched from its Tel Aviv base to accurately strike Hamas strongholds, 15 Israeli soldiers were killed, but Hamas suffered even greater losses and several commanders were arrested.

There are hardliners within Hamas who want to continue fighting, but pragmatists look at the map and see that the push line is all red, supplies are short, and fighters cannot last long. Hamas also purged several commanders internally in July, and those arrested in interrogation rooms were suspected of leaking secrets. Throughout 2023 and 2025, Israel's Iron Dome system intercepts most rockets, ground forces clear streets, Hamas has only 48 hostages left from the original 251, and it has to face exchange pressure. Trump's plan did not specify the founding clause, nor did Hamas fight for it, because they knew that if they continued to fight, neither hostages nor power could be preserved. Israel's onslaught directly broke Hamas's desire to continue to resist.

The three main reasons come together, Hamas’ choice is only one way. Military consensus is at the top, there is no international gang, and the battlefield can’t be fought again, declaring that the people are free and power-building themes, things are naturally set aside. Thinking of the November 2023 temporary ceasefire, when Hamas released more than 100 hostages, exchanged 240 Palestinian prisoners, and aid came in a lot, but the battle soon resumed. This time, Trump’s 20 point plan was more comprehensive, including the withdrawal of troops and the de-military zone, and after Hamas agreed, Trump immediately announced that peace in the Middle East was coming, and called on Israel to stop bombing. Hamas replied that 72 hours were difficult because the coordination of the exchange
