Trump says Israel agrees to “preliminary withdrawal line”

Xinhua Agency, Washington, October 4 (Reporter Xia Lin) U.S. President Trump posted on social media on the 4th, saying that Israel has agreed to the "preliminary withdrawal line" in the Gaza Strip, and that the United States has explained it to the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). Once Hamas confirms it,"the ceasefire will take effect immediately."

Trump said that after the ceasefire came into effect, Israel and Hamas would begin to exchange Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners, which would create conditions for the next phase of withdrawal.

Trump also released a map of the Gaza Strip with Israel's "preliminary withdrawal line" marked in yellow. The Israel Times reported that this line is roughly the same as the Israeli army's line of control in the Gaza Strip before the Israeli army began its large-scale offensive on Gaza City, northern Gaza Strip in September. At that time, the Israeli army controlled about 70% of the Gaza Strip. This means that after Israel completes its "preliminary withdrawal", it will still control large areas of land in the southern Gaza Strip such as Rafah City, Khan Younis City and parts of the northern region.

Trump posted on social media earlier in the day that "Israel has suspended bombing" to allow the detainees to be released. "Hamas must act as soon as possible, otherwise everything will be in vain. I will not tolerate delay-which many believe will happen-or any outcome that causes Gaza to pose a threat (to Israel) again."

Trump urged Hamas to agree to end his "20-point plan" on the Gaza ceasefire and post-war arrangements by 5 p.m. in eastern U.S. time, otherwise he would face "the catastrophe of hell" hours later, Hamas announced in principle agreement to release all Israeli detainees and remains under the "20-point plan" as part of an exchange of personnel, and said the agenda's issues concerning the future of Gaza and the broader rights of the Palestinian people would be addressed within the framework of the Palestinian nation's self-determination, in accordance with international law and relevant international resolutions.

Trump later posted on social media demanding that Israel "immediately stop bombing". The Israeli army announced that under the instructions of the Israeli government, it turned to "defensive operations" in the Gaza Strip overnight and suspended offensive operations aimed at seizing Gaza City, but did not withdraw its troops. Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip continued to cause a large number of Palestinian casualties on the 4th.
