Breaking-News >> WorldNews US Treasury confirms considering issuing "Trump $1 coin" to commemorate 250th anniversary of the United States
According to the U.S. Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC) local time on October 3, the U.S. Treasury Department confirmed that it is considering issuing a double-sided $1 commemorative coin printed with the portrait of U.S. President Trump to “honour Trump and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.” Brandon Beach, a Treasury official overseeing the U.S. Mint, reportedly confirmed that the draft Trump commemorative coin "really exists". According to the draft, one side of the coin is engraved with Trump's profile portrait and the logo from 1776 to 2026 (the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States), and the other side is engraved with Trump's actions when he was attempted to be assassinated at the presidential campaign rally in Pennsylvania in 2024, as well as the slogans he shouted to supporters after the attack. A U.S. Treasury spokesman told CNBC that the final design of the $1 coin to commemorate the country's 250th anniversary has not yet been determined. CNBC said a federal law signed by Trump in January 2021, a week before the end of his first term, allowed the Treasury Secretary to order the minting of a $1 coin "bearing the symbol of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States." However, the law stipulates that the design on the back of any coin must not include a portrait or bust of any person, whether alive or deceased. The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco said, “In order to avoid the image of monarchy, the long-standing tradition of the United States is to print portraits of deceased figures only on currencies and coins. This tradition was formally enacted in the Congress Act of 1866.” CNN that the only surviving presidential appearance on coins occurred in 1926, when Calvin Coolidge was the then president of the United States. CNN said that the draft Trump commemorative coin confirmed by the Ministry of Finance caused controversy because it violated American law to display the image of the current president or the former president who is still alive on the coin. It's unclear whether the controversial coin design will actually be minted. CNBC said that the U.S. Treasury Department did not comment on the media's questions about the legality of the draft coin.
