AI video social app Sora hits Apple's top apps list

Cailian, October 3 (Editor Zhao Hao) On Friday (October 3) local time, Sora, a video social application launched by OpenAI on Tuesday, topped Apple's list of "Top Free Apps" in the United States.

It is worth mentioning that the top three on the list are Sora, Google Gemini and ChatGPT-OpenAI's products account for two seats. At the same time, Sora is also # 1 in the "Photography & Video" category in Apple's US App Store.

On the day Sora released the application, the Financial Associated Press made a follow-up report. It is understood that this App is only open on Apple iOS devices, and adopts an invitation system. Users who download the App must rely on the invitation code given by others to use the function.

It should be noted that when new users register successfully under someone else’s invitation code, Sora will also give new users 4 invitation seats.

Despite these limitations, Sora still topped Apple’s costume app rankings, while videos of OpenAI’s “Sora 2” new model can also be seen on many other social media platforms.

Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, said on Friday in an X-Platform post, “It’s really shocking to see the energy that human collective creativity has shown so far.

“We’re going to send more invitation codes soon, I promise!” Peebles also hinted that Sora’s team is pushing for the new app to land on the Android platform faster.

OpenAI said in a press release that the Sora 2 model could accomplish some of the difficulties of previous models, generating scenes and sounds in a “highly realistic” way.

In particular, Sora also has a "cameos" feature. Users only need to record an audio or video briefly in the App, and they can directly bring themselves into their Sora scenes, such as generating an AI video where they arm wrestle with friends.

To promote this feature, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, personally dropped as the highest-ranking “actor” in this popular AI creation: he appeared in the conference room to talk to users, and even became a thief who stole NVIDIA chips.

Videos generated by Sora will come with watermarks

Some analysts believe that with this new application, OpenAI is also taking the biggest step towards building social media products. This makes the company compete more directly with Meta and others. In the process, OpenAI may open up new sources of advertising revenue while increasing the exposure of the technology.

However, the realism of Sora’s video generation has also raised some concerns, and OpenAI said the company has taken steps to address the security threats that the app could bring, including allowing users to clearly control how their images are used on the platform.

Altman said on the day of the release of Sora, "The company's team has put a lot of heart into how to avoid this trap, striving to create a pleasant product, and has put forward some promising ideas."
