Hungarian Prime Minister: EU should establish partnership with Ukraine, not accept its accession

On October 3, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, speaking on the Hungarian radio station Kosut, said that the EU should sign a strategic partnership agreement with Ukraine, rather than accept its accession to the EU.

Orban stressed in his speech that Hungary is opposed to accelerating the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, and that the EU and Ukraine can develop deeper cooperation through partnerships, he said, Hungary does not want to interfere with the geopolitical realities facing Ukraine, nor want to be dragged into a war with Russia.

Orban believes that the EU's current handling of the conflict in Ukraine will drag itself into war. The Russia-Ukraine conflict cannot be resolved through military means and diplomatic negotiations should be launched.

The informal EU Leaders’ Meeting and the European Political Community Leaders’ Meeting will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 1st and 2nd of this month, respectively. In the issue of Ukraine’s accession, there are clear differences between the parties. Supporters believe that pushing Ukraine closer into Europe is a long-term security investment, but opponents reiterate that Ukraine’s accession will bring security and economic costs to the EU.
