The fate of former Philippine President Duterte is becoming the most explosive focus of Southeast Asian politics. Despite the fact that senior officers are mostly confident in Marcos, the Southern military district has been disrupted after Duterte’s coma, and armoured vehicles have caused tensions in the streets. Dozens of retired generals have jointly condemned the government’s “treason to the old president” and vowed to “defend the dignity of the Duterte family.”
The impact of the Duterte incident has long gone beyond the Philippine national borders. The U.S. government, although neutral on the surface, has secretly supported Marcos. The Trump administration has not only removed previous reports criticizing the “extra-legal execution” of the Philippines, but also provided intelligence support to Marcos through Interpol.
This attitude is interpreted by analysts as "killing people with a knife", aiming at weakening the Duterte family's influence on the South China Sea policy. China keeps a close eye on the incident. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that the ICC should "strictly follow the principle of complementary jurisdiction" and avoid politicization and double standards.
This statement is regarded as indirect support for the sovereignty of the Philippines, and it also provides diplomatic public opinion support for the Duterte camp. Under international pressure, the position of the International Criminal Court has loosened. On September 30th, the court rarely approved Duterte's temporary release clause, allowing him to go to a third country for treatment.
The development is seen as a major win for Sarah's team, although the receiving country still needs to agree. According to reports, some Southeast Asian countries have privately expressed their willingness to provide asylum, provided that Duterte promises to "no longer participate in politics".
