The presidential election of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party will be held on October 4th. There are five candidates in this election, namely Toshimitsu Motegi, former secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, Hayashi Fangzheng, current chief cabinet secretary, Koizumi Shinjiro, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, and sanae takaichi and Takayuki Kobayashi, former ministers of economic security.

The Liberal Democratic Party lost successively in the House of Representatives election in October last year and the Senate election in July this year. The ruling coalition composed of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Komeito Party lost more than half of the seats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced his decision to resign as president of the Liberal Democratic Party on September 7th, which also means that he will step down as prime minister. The Liberal Democratic Party announced the party's presidential election on September 22nd, and the votes are scheduled to be counted on October 4th. Then Japan will hold a prime minister's nomination election to elect a new prime minister.
