On October 3, local time, South Korean President Li Keqiang travelled to Jiangsu, Jiangsu, a city located in the border area of the DPRK, to express his condolences to local residents. Li Keqiang expressed condolences to North Korean dispersed families living in the border area during the condolences, and felt regret and grief over their years of not being able to return home.
The Korean Peninsula has been divided since the armistice of the Korean War in 1953. War and confrontation have led to the separation of a large number of families between the DPRK and the ROK, and their relatives are separated from the north and the south. From August 2000 to August 2018, the ROK and the DPRK held 21 reunion activities for separated families. After the leaders of the ROK and the DPRK met three times in 2018, with the fruitless meeting between the leaders of the DPRK and the United States in February 2019, the relations between the ROK and the DPRK also became colder, and the reunion activities of separated families were subsequently interrupted.
