Israeli capture of Gaza aid ship volunteers: Mexican president voiced opposition

On October 2, local time, Mexican President Simbaum delivered a speech demanding that the Israeli government immediately repatriate six of its citizens who were arrested by Israeli armed forces while trying to deliver aid to Gaza.

Members of the Global Endurance Fleet, which ships humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip, include more than 500 volunteers from more than 40 countries on board about 50 ships seeking to break Israel’s maritime blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Simbaum said six Mexicans in the fleet are currently detained in the Ashdod port, 40 kilometers south of Tel Aviv. Consular aid has not yet reached, and the Mexican consulate will be ready to provide necessary support through all possible legal and diplomatic means. Simbaum noted that the Mexican government “has issued four diplomatic documents to the Israeli government in three days” requiring the Israeli side to provide “personal security guarantees” for Mexican citizens and requiring “immediate deportation.”

Simbaum stressed that she opposed the Israeli armed forces’ act, as the arrested persons did not commit any crimes in addition to delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza; she also called on the Israeli government to allow humanitarian aid to pass through and called for “stop harassment against Gaza.”

Meanwhile, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a communiqué stating that humanitarian aid does not constitute any criminal act, on the contrary, it is an obligation of the parties to the armed conflict and an expression of the spirit of solidarity of the international community.
